(Female voice on pre-recorded tape)

IT IS SAID, BY CERTAIN PEOPLE:

Everything is a lie. . .but we are about to be told the truth.

We are always lie-ing---in wait. . . for the truth will come out, the words will be squeeded, the truth made to emerge, forced, lies left behind, tight ahead. We are always getting better. we are getting nearer. We will pull the truth in on us, collapse it around us, a false house of cards giving way to a royal flush. YES! Truth flushed, fleshed out, the world collapsed into (yst into, nothing esle) with no remainder, no left over, no hang-over after a long night of intoxification wherein we, ala Nietzsche in the margins, forget our umbrella, no unsightly (literally) parasites sucking out our vital fluids, contaminating with the falseness of superstition, the soft, (the feminine?), the hidden, that which cant be forced, which refuses to show itself, that which wont go away but must, that something which always seems to be just out of reach, on the tip of the tongue, the uncanny, the thing which nakes us swell, engorged, the thing which lays beside us, INside us...

this . . . this . . . THATNESS!

If layers of reality, independent from one another, require, in order to be described, independent languages, then there is a strong suggestion that those languages are totally untranslatable, and, if so, there is indeed a good reason to argue that various world views can co-exist in perfect mutual indifference: they cannot be confronted with, or contradict, each other.

Metaphysical Horror,

Leszek Kolakowski.

For Freud, the function of consciousness is the defense of the organism against shocks from the external environment. In this sense traumas, hysterical repetitions, dreams, are ways in which the incompletely assimilated shock attempts to make its way through to consciousness and hence to ultimate appeasement. [In modern society] . . . a miracle: the sudden saturation of the banal with the whole series of mechanical substitutes between consciousness and its objects, shielding us perhaps, yet at the same time depriving us of any way of assimilating what happens to us or of transforming our sensations into any genuinely personal experience.

from Walter Benjamin in

Marxism and Form,

Fredric Jameson.

Little by little history has been reduced to the precise field of causes and effects, leaving no space for the extraordinary event, that which is not measured by its causes, that which creates its own setting, its own dramaturgy. Only meaningful events exist, those which do not go further than their meaning, which occur in order to verify a law, a relation of force, a pre-existing structure or model: this is also simulation, the hegemony of simulation at the heart of history and it is for this reason that history is finished.

The Year 2000 Will Not Take Place,

Jean Baudrillard.

--Could you see the structure of the buildings? Are they similar to ours?

. . .They seemed as if theyre stucco or cement.

--Was it like a landscape, a . . .

. . . In the red part there wasnt. There wasnt any vegetable life.

--Was there any foliage in the red portion?

. . . Nothing.

--You were like in a red cloud?

. . . No, it was--uh, there was land and there were buildings, but there was no vegetable life. Just land and buildings . . .

. . . all you can do is make out the form of things.

. . . Im seeing a pyramid; but this pyramid is a different kind of pyramid--it has one big flat side and the others indent, sort of. We are going over it, high in the sky.

--getting back to those pyramids you mentioned-

. . . one pyramid. . . with a white edge.

--Where was the white edge? Was it on all three edges?

. . . It was like a--okay, you take a regular star, right? Well, it had the edges which were just like a star but it was cut off right in the middle, the center, so it was straight across. And then you just had the star.

--You mean like a painted white edge or a source of illumination?

. . . It was white going down the whole edge.

--Like if you took a knife and cut off the sharp edge and made it a flat edge all the way down and painted it white?

. . . Yes and then there was the head on the very top. There was no white there. It just stopped at a certain section, and there was the big head on top--it still came to a point.

--What was the head? Could you see?

. . . It looked sort of like an Egyptian head, and it had like a - you know, how they wear those hats? It was just a regular head. It wasnt fat like the Sphinx--the Sphinx has a big fat face. This had full cheeks, but it looked sort of feminine yet male.

I left this earth, yes. I left this earth. I believe we were in space and somehow I believe we were in the center of the earth. Now how can you do both?

From The Andreason Affair,

R. Fowler.

I looked for the sun but I didnt see it. I didnt see any sky at all, just empty space.

It looked like one unending building with the red light coming from inside as well as outside. Everything was red. The avenue was 50 to 60 meters wide and all the buildings started from the road and went upwards completely straight, very tall. We couldnt see the tops of the buildings because everything was reddish up there.

The light cane from above. It was a reflection and it lighted the whole sky. There were no clouds. It was a ceiling not a sky.

no curbs, no sidewalks, no doors, no cars, hydrants or signs, no people or animals, no trees, nothing but the tall unending buildings on either side as far as the eye could see.

We went to a place where nobody goes. I felt we were not on earth. I think we were taken some place. . . where I dont know.
